Knowing your life purpose is such an important topic for anyone in life that has always asked this question.
I felt I have always been very lucky around knowing my purpose, although it’s not complete currently, I know I’m on the right path, and things just “feel” right.
There are a multitude of ways to get to know your purpose and put you on a path that makes you feel you are headed in the right direction.
The key thing is people tend to think of life purpose, as a job or a role. I don’t necessarily agree with this image. Your life purpose and what you care about is normally something deeper than this, and the job or role is just a vessel to bring your purpose to the world.
For example, I believe my purpose is about helping people connect with their bodies on a deeper level, and initially, I choose being a chiropractor to allow me to bring my purpose forward in the world. Being a chiropractor was never my purpose. As I am stepping deeper into my authenticity, I may decide at some point to drop the title chiropractor, and step into a different vessel to bring my gifts forwards.
So how can I help you find your life purpose?
First and foremost, you need to acknowledge that you are either on a path that isn’t authentic or acknowledge to some level that you don’t know what your life purpose is. This is normally quite a challenging task for some, but many of you reading this may have already decided that you don’t know, which is why you have come to read this article.
There are two things that you need to run side by side in order to achieve this goal, which may seem like a mountain. But I believe it is simply a state of claiming what you already know to be true about yourself.
Many people can identify things that they like or feel good about doing. When asked what do you like? You could real off about 4-5 different points in life, that you enjoy. The challenge comes from thinking about what you would like to do “job” wise. But for now, I don’t want you to think about the job or the role. I want you to think about what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. Is it connecting with others on a deeper level, being in nature, travelling? It could be anything. Take time to think about what you are either good at or enjoy, then get a notepad and write them down.
When you have these things listed, then we can start work.
First thing
You can then think about the different vessels (roles or jobs) that would help you connect to this enjoyment. So, if you like being in nature, maybe you want to join a zoo or work in conservation. If you want a deeper connection with others, maybe a counsellor, or therapist. If you like to travel or being abroad, perhaps you might want to go into the world of blogging or reviewing different countries and activities, or you might like to work on a cruise liner.
There are so many possibilities depending on what you enjoy. It may require some trial and error. You may just need to take the leap and apply for a role that you are not sure about, just to try it out, and see if it’s a good fit. The idea behind this is it will get you closer to what you want to do. Part of the journey requires you to take action.
Don’t be afraid to get it perfect before you take that leap. For me, my purpose and vessel are constantly in flow and realigning themselves every step in my life.
In the beginning, I got such a strong feeling about needing to be a chiropractor, but I never wanted to adjust anybody. I didn’t like that side of things, but I got such a strong calling, so off I went to university. Later it was revealed that I found a completely different chiropractic technique, that I knew what I wanted to do. So, you see if I hadn’t taken the impulse to go to university and study chiropractic, I would never have found the next piece of the puzzle.
Life is just one big puzzle and you need to collect all the pieces. I am pretty sure in my journey there are many more pieces of the puzzle, but I’m excited, and although not everything is set in place, I know I’m on the right path.
So part of this journey is just picking something, if it feels right, then go with it, and it will lead you down a path where you will find something else, or extra to add to you tool bag. This will also help you discover more about yourself, which will lead to further developments in this area. You might start a journey and release that you don’t want to do that. That in itself is a massive win, as it’s just about ruling things about and getting more specific. Don’t be afraid to try something. When you’re doing it you will get a feeling.
It’s important when thinking about life purpose, that you let the energy flow in your body. Knowing who you are and being certain about that, flows from your pelvis. Perhaps you may even have tight hips or pelvis, or low back?? If this is the case, then chances are quite a lot of the energy you need to feel is stuck here and needs to be liberated. If that is true then you need to work on that, as that will effortlessly allow you to connect into that “right” feeling that I talk about. Doing meditation or one of my release techniques on YouTube will help you liberate this energy and stiffness.
Next thing to do is to learn more about yourself.
Take a few online tests, or personality tests, that will help you identify strengths or weaknesses. One of my favourite ones is:
Myers-Briggs, and also Cliftonstrengths. These test together will help you learn more about what you are good at and highlight that to you. If that resonates then you can move forward and see what roles/jobs a good fit might be, and then go out and try one. If it’s not right, then cross it off the list and move to the next one. See your life purpose as an evolving journey, not as a certain “got it”. And don’t look to social media and think that person has it all sorted, as you don’t know what’s going on in that person’s life, and what emotions they may be feeling.
Between liberating energy and stiffness in your pelvis and learning about your strengths will set you on the start of your journey to identifying who you are and who you want to be.
You may also find useful to set some daily intentions around your purpose and what you want to incorporate into your life going forwards that will help your subconscious get your closer to your dreams. Check out this video here.
This should give you some ideas on how to start your journey to getting closer to your purpose. The key points being, take some online test and get to know yourself, and start liberating more energy from your pelvis that will give you insight and feel into what is “right” for you.
